Friday Sweetness

Well, today was a bad day.
I was grumpy, upset and spaced out.
But now it's finally over.

Good thing it's Friday tomorrow.
The song I have chosen this week is by a band called The Lumineers.
I don't really know much about them.
A folk rock band.
American.
Two boys, one girl and many instruments.
Simple melody and cute lyrics.

The Lumineers - Ho Hey

Happy almost weekend people.

Infatuation time # 2

This weeks infatuation goes to....

Elijah Wood

So I have decided that I'm going to TRY and alternate genders each week.
'Try' being the operative word there.
I had a girl last week, so there is guy this week.
No guarantees I can keep up the pattern though.
Ladies are more infatuating after all.

You now how straight girls have girl crushes?
Well... Oh, Elijah.
You are one of my very limited boy crushes.
You're all the things a lesbian looks for in a boy crush.
Clean, mysterious, nerdy and feminine.

This infatuation also stems from Elijah refusing
to be typecast and consistently choosing to be in really good films.

Starting off as a child actor he just got better and better.
Unlike many others he didn't became a drug addict.
Never attempted suicide
Never sued his parents.
Never got caught up in fame where he placed himself on top of people.
He is just a sweet, down-to-earth guy.
Just a handful of causes he is involved in include,
  • Cancer
  •  Animal Welfare
  • Conservation
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Children
  • Disaster Relief
  • Parent/Family Support
  • Health
  • Creative Arts
  • Environment
By all means joy if you will.

Now just try and tell me you don't have a boy crush too.

This image above is taken from a clip with Shirley Manson.
(AKA the dead fucking sexy red head lead singer of Garbage)
If you haven't yet had the pleasure of viewing these beauties
together than by all means... Indulge yourself.

Elijah now stars in the U.S version of Wilfred.
Now, I'll admit I was nervous.
Australian humour doesn't always translate well in America.
But they loved it.

Okay, okay.
I just have to put in a Wilfred 'Best Of' clip below.
From the original Australian series though.

But back to the American version...

Until next time

Infatuation of the week #1

I have decided to introduce to new post topic that I can hopefully keep up on a weekly basis.
However, we all know how bad I am at keeping up with regular posts so I
guess you'll just be patient with me.
I apologise in advance if I skip a week or 3 every now and again.

Someone I have crushing on pretty hard for a while now is...
>insert drum roll<
Marion Cotillard

Clearly it's because of her intelligence and nothing more.
Well, maybe a little more.
Marion is simply lovely.
This little frenchy was born in Paris, her papa was a former mime/director
and her mama was a french actress/ drama teacher.

From 1993 - 2002 she stars in loads of french films.
I must see all.

Some more well know films in which you can find her include,
Big Fish, Public Enemies, Nine, Midnight in Paris, Contagion and The Dark Knight.
Though all smaller type roles.
More known for Inception.
Mostly known for La vie en rose.
I heart that movie so bad.
She plays Edith Piaf and does it so well.
All the tragedy and heartbreak.
The immense self destruction.
 The little sparrow.

I look forward to finally watching all her older films as well as any new ones to come.

In the mean time, hope you can enjoy her beauty as much as I do.

In case by some silly reason you haven't seen Inception yet,
here are a few good reasons to watch.

Marion Cotillard is in it.
Ellen Page is in it.
Joseph Gorden Levitt is in it.
Cillian Murphy is in it.

 Be warned though.
You may need to watch it a few times.
I've seen it maybe 4 times and each time I discover something new.
I have those 'Shit, I totally didn't see that before'
or 'Ohhhhh, I get that scene now' moments.

Here is one of my favourite scenes

Also an Craig Ferguson interview with Marion.
Partly because I loves his accent and equally because I love hers.

Until my next infatuation, y'all.

Owed you 4, I'll give you 8

Whoops.
It's been a month since I have posted a Friday song.

Don't fret my pretties, scroll past my lame 'dear diary' scribblings and
you'll get what you want
(albeit in a less 'totally walking on a cloud' melody)

I've been a bit glum lately with my work situation.
My senior technician has been offered a job with an annual salary close to100k.
A job that involves setting up new laboratory instruments.
Loads of travel and learning new things.
 I thought he was gone.
But I received some good news at work last night.
He turned down the job of his dreams!
I know how that reads.
Turns out I'm not the only one who is sometimes scared of change.
I shouldn't be so happy that he turned the job offer down.
I swear I'm not a bitch.
But hey it is his choice and it certainly makes my work life a fuck load easier.
So I can't help but be happy.

So happy in fact that it even feels fridayish.
Despite the harsh reality of it really being Monday.

Warning: The following is not so folky and slightly heavier.
But still awesome.

Here we go.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Phenomena

Since we're on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs train, how about this one
Gold Lion

Annnnnnd, of course, how could I not.
Maps

Spinnerette - Ghetto Love

Peaches - Operate
(Not sure what this clip is about... it's unofficial and weird but it's her voice)

Muse - Time is Running Out

Next  from Muse is an all time favourite
 Supermassive Black Hole

Lastly from their very different new album
Supremacy

 And that's that.

Failing

Remember a little while ago when I set a few simple goals?
Well here is an update.

Bad food choices
I'm still eating an obscene amount of junk food.
No excuses.
I just am.

 Walking my dogs
Since that post I have walked Luna once.
Yoshi zero.

Finish a book
Nope.
I currently have 4 on the go though so I'm sure I'll get there soon.

Exercise
For about 3 days I met my pitiful goal of 15 minutes of exercise a day.
This is embarrassing but I'm going to share it with you anyway because I probably deserve it.
Ever heard of Zumba?
I can't dance and possess nothing even remotely close to rhythm.
(let's be honest here and can hardly even spell rhythm. It took me 6 times to get it right)
BUT
in my lounge room with the blinds tightly shut, I did it.
I felt stupid the entire time, which was only made worse by the
realisation that my dogs were watching me.
With a definite look.
I could actually hear them in my head.
Yoshi - "Ha, this bitch thinks she's Latino.
Luna - "Oh, dude I know. Did you see her trying to samba?"
Yoshi - "Seriously, I want to look away but I can't."

The next day I had to put them outside for Zumba time.
As horrifyingly embarrassing as it is, Zumba is actually a fairly hard workout.
Plenty of moving and jumping and I could feel my body being pushed.
I lasted 15 minutes but each session is supposed to go for 45 minutes.
So I cheated a bit there and just stopped when the steps got too hard.
The steps can be tricky.
Plus, even though I know this sounds bad/pathetic it sounds,
I couldn't help but be a little turned on by the
Zumba animation character who was teaching me the steps.
The playstation actually asks if you want a male or female instructor.
Umm duh.
It was mostly her fault for saying how great I was doing
and for telling me how good I looked.
Damn you sexy animation and your hot back up dancers!

 There you have it.
A recap of my failing as of late.
I haven't given up.

After all, is there not still 2 weeks of Spring left?

Cheer up

Let me start by saying that I am feeling much better today.

But sometimes it's hard to cheer yourself up.
We all have our own methods.
For me, I can be a bit of an escapist at times.
So an easy way for me to forget my troubles is to sometimes disappear into films.

There are specifically two types that work at making me happy.
  • Those made for children
  • Films made over 50 years ago
Both film genres can work absolute wonders.
The following are some of my favourites.

Harry Potter

Any Harry Potter movie.
My partner Candice will often come home to find me engrossed in them.
Sometimes I get that look and I can almost read her mind.
"Shit... Shauna is watching Potter. Is she happy or sad?"
See, that's the thing, I crave this series when I'm both really happy and devastatingly upset.
So to her it's probably confusing at times.
In the last 12 days I have watched all 8 Harry Potter films.
But I needed to.

Finding Nemo

What kind of person doesn't like/get cheered up by this movie?
I'll tell you who.
The people-I-don't-wanna-be-friends-with type of people.

The Golden Compass

This movie is the shit.
It's the first movie to come out of a book trilogy called - His Dark Materials
(though only the first book has been made into a film)
Phillip Pullman is the kind of guy I would like to have a scotch with.
Unlike Narnia, his books don't push the idea of religion.
Rather the opposite.
If you haven't seen it and don't shudder at the thought of PG rated movies then give it a go.
Or just read the books... as usual the books always trump the movie.
Another reason to read the books is that they won't be making the next 2 films in the series.
The official story is that they over spent the budget
but the conspiracy version is that the
catholic church pulled some strings and shut it down.
Meh, who knows.
It's just a shame is all.

_________________________________________________

When it comes to old movies,
the terrible acting/story lines don't even make me flinch.

A few of my favourites include
(in the black & white variety)

Arsenic and Old Lace
I love Cary Grant in most of his films.

Some Like it Hot

Oh Marilyn, you beautiful thing you.
I'm a big Marilyn fan... have read biographies and seen many, many doco's on this woman.
Although I have to agree she looks amazing in The Seven Year Itch,
it's a shame she is often remembered simply as the
hot chick standing over a grate with a gust of wind showing off her amazing legs.

She was more than that.
She was complicated, emotional, brave, interesting and
most importantly she craved knowledge.
Don't be fooled by the roles she was cast in or perfection she played the dumb blonde.
This woman had a lot going on in her head.
She wrote (heartbreaking) poetry.
She loved books.
Dead (no pun intended) sexy.

Last but not least

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Ohhhhh how I heart Audrey Hepburn.
This woman is all kinds of amazing.
 Another film of hers,
that is also a favourite pick me up, is 'How to Steal a Million'.
I love her in everything.
But Truman Capote's Holly Golightly character is by far my favourite .
If you've ever read the book, you'll know that Holly is actually an upper class hooker.
In the movie she isn't.
Clearly 1961 just wasn't ready for that kind of scandal.
I love how independent she is.
I love that she called her cat, 'Cat'.
I love how strange and eccentric she is.
And I love that she will never let herself be put in a cage.
Oh, and clearly she loves boobs.

There you have it.
The movies that fix my little heart.
I think that everyone should have an emergency list of
films ,music, places, people or whatever it is that helps you out of a dark spot.
Even if you rarely need it... it's just comforting to know it's there.
