Cheer up

Let me start by saying that I am feeling much better today.

But sometimes it's hard to cheer yourself up.
We all have our own methods.
For me, I can be a bit of an escapist at times.
So an easy way for me to forget my troubles is to sometimes disappear into films.

There are specifically two types that work at making me happy.
  • Those made for children
  • Films made over 50 years ago
Both film genres can work absolute wonders.
The following are some of my favourites.

Harry Potter

Any Harry Potter movie.
My partner Candice will often come home to find me engrossed in them.
Sometimes I get that look and I can almost read her mind.
"Shit... Shauna is watching Potter. Is she happy or sad?"
See, that's the thing, I crave this series when I'm both really happy and devastatingly upset.
So to her it's probably confusing at times.
In the last 12 days I have watched all 8 Harry Potter films.
But I needed to.

Finding Nemo

What kind of person doesn't like/get cheered up by this movie?
I'll tell you who.
The people-I-don't-wanna-be-friends-with type of people.

The Golden Compass

This movie is the shit.
It's the first movie to come out of a book trilogy called - His Dark Materials
(though only the first book has been made into a film)
Phillip Pullman is the kind of guy I would like to have a scotch with.
Unlike Narnia, his books don't push the idea of religion.
Rather the opposite.
If you haven't seen it and don't shudder at the thought of PG rated movies then give it a go.
Or just read the books... as usual the books always trump the movie.
Another reason to read the books is that they won't be making the next 2 films in the series.
The official story is that they over spent the budget
but the conspiracy version is that the
catholic church pulled some strings and shut it down.
Meh, who knows.
It's just a shame is all.

_________________________________________________

When it comes to old movies,
the terrible acting/story lines don't even make me flinch.

A few of my favourites include
(in the black & white variety)

Arsenic and Old Lace
I love Cary Grant in most of his films.

Some Like it Hot

Oh Marilyn, you beautiful thing you.
I'm a big Marilyn fan... have read biographies and seen many, many doco's on this woman.
Although I have to agree she looks amazing in The Seven Year Itch,
it's a shame she is often remembered simply as the
hot chick standing over a grate with a gust of wind showing off her amazing legs.

She was more than that.
She was complicated, emotional, brave, interesting and
most importantly she craved knowledge.
Don't be fooled by the roles she was cast in or perfection she played the dumb blonde.
This woman had a lot going on in her head.
She wrote (heartbreaking) poetry.
She loved books.
Dead (no pun intended) sexy.

Last but not least

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Ohhhhh how I heart Audrey Hepburn.
This woman is all kinds of amazing.
 Another film of hers,
that is also a favourite pick me up, is 'How to Steal a Million'.
I love her in everything.
But Truman Capote's Holly Golightly character is by far my favourite .
If you've ever read the book, you'll know that Holly is actually an upper class hooker.
In the movie she isn't.
Clearly 1961 just wasn't ready for that kind of scandal.
I love how independent she is.
I love that she called her cat, 'Cat'.
I love how strange and eccentric she is.
And I love that she will never let herself be put in a cage.
Oh, and clearly she loves boobs.

There you have it.
The movies that fix my little heart.
I think that everyone should have an emergency list of
films ,music, places, people or whatever it is that helps you out of a dark spot.
Even if you rarely need it... it's just comforting to know it's there.
